Barima Sarpong Calls for Honest Dialogue to Resolve Afigya Sekyere East NPP Brouhaha

A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Afigya Sekyere East Constituency, Barima Sarpong, has appealed to the party’s national and Ashanti Regional leadership, as well as constituency stakeholders, to engage in an honest dialogue to resolve the current impasse surrounding the constituency’s executive elections.
According to him, the recent developments, including concerns over the electoral album, the subsequent annulment of the executive election process by the National Steering Committee, and differing positions expressed by the newly elected executives and the Ashanti Regional leadership, have created tension within the constituency.
In a press release dated July 18, 2026, Barima Sarpong said the disturbances that reportedly led to the arrest of some individuals should serve as a clear indication that urgent steps were needed to restore calm and unity.
“My grandfather, the late Kofi Adu, once advised, ‘Kwaku, in all things, allow your wisdom to control your power.’ Wow! Agya Adu, your words are timeless,” he stated, adding that the advice was particularly relevant to the current situation in the NPP and Afigya Sekyere East.
He said his desire was to see a disciplined, peaceful and united constituency, stressing that Afigya Sekyere East had a proud political legacy associated with prominent figures such as the late Victor Owusu and former Chief of Staff, Hon. Kwadwo Okyere Mpiani.
“We cannot afford to dim the light of glory once lit by these two men and many others, gone and around,” he said.
Barima Sarpong urged the national and regional leadership of the NPP to sit with constituency stakeholders for what he described as an “honest and fair dialogue” aimed at ensuring discipline and lasting peace.
He noted that the party was strongest when its national and regional leadership worked closely together, particularly on sensitive matters affecting constituencies.
“Afigya Sekyere East is part of Ashanti Region, and the Regional leadership understands the local dynamics best. If we create more room for national and regional to engage first before major decisions, we will avoid confusion and build greater trust at the grassroots,” he stated.
He emphasised that the issue should not be reduced to a contest over who was right or wrong, but rather approached as a collective effort to find a way forward.
“This is not about who was right or wrong. This is about how we move forward together,” he said.
Barima Sarpong further appealed to the National Executives, Ashanti Regional Executives and Afigya Sekyere East stakeholders to come together without egos or media grandstanding to resolve the matter.
He proposed that the dialogue should focus on three key areas: reviewing the concerns surrounding the electoral album; agreeing on a clear and peaceful roadmap for the constituency, including the way forward for the executive elections; and reaffirming the party’s commitment to discipline in a manner that promotes healing and unity.
“To all sides, national, regional, and constituency, I believe we all want the same thing: a strong, united NPP in Afigya Sekyere East. No one intends to destroy the Party. Sometimes communication breaks down, sometimes timing is off. That is why dialogue is important,” he said.
He urged all parties to allow wisdom to prevail over power and to choose peace and unity over pride and division.
“Let us allow wisdom to control power. Let us choose peace over pride, and unity over division,” Barima Sarpong appealed.
He said the example set in Afigya Sekyere East would resonate across the NPP ahead of the 2028 general elections, adding that the constituency, the party and Ghana deserved a peaceful resolution to the matter.
