MOFA Welcomes 3Trees Ghana Initiative, Calls for Greater Private Sector Support for Farmers

The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. Eric Opoku, has commended 3Trees Ghana Painting Limited for undertaking a major painting and rehabilitation project at the Ministry’s headquarters while appealing to more private sector institutions to support Ghana’s agricultural sector and the upcoming 42nd National Farmers’ Day celebrations.
Speaking during a donation and painting exercise at the forecourt of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) in Accra, the Minister said the intervention by 3Trees Ghana forms part of the national “Brighten Ghana” initiative, which seeks to rehabilitate and beautify public institutions across the country.
Hon. Opoku recalled that the Ministry recently launched the 42nd National Farmers’ Day celebrations and urged Ghanaians to contribute generously towards the event scheduled for December 4, 2026.
He noted that agriculture remains the backbone of Ghana’s economy and is central to President John Dramani Mahama’s Agriculture for Economic Transformation Agenda, which aims to improve livelihoods, create jobs and promote economic prosperity through increased agricultural productivity.
“The fourth of December is a special day set aside to honour, reward and appreciate the hardworking farmers of our country. We are therefore encouraging the general public and corporate institutions to support this national cause,” he said.
The Minister expressed gratitude to 3Trees Ghana Painting Limited for repainting the Ministry’s headquarters at no cost to the government.
“They are here to paint the national headquarters of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture free of charge. We are extremely grateful for this generous gesture and want to assure them that Ghana’s farmers appreciate their sacrifices,” he stated.
He urged other companies to emulate the example of 3Trees Ghana, stressing that every contribution towards agriculture ultimately benefits the entire country through increased food production and lower food prices.
Hon. Opoku also acknowledged the participation of UMB Bank in the exercise, describing the collaboration as an important step towards building stronger partnerships between government and the private sector.
“We believe it is only through unity, collaboration and the pooling of our resources that we can improve the lives of Ghanaians and put smiles on the faces of our people,” he added.
Strengthening Partnerships with the Private Sector
Following the outdoor ceremony, the Minister hosted the management of UMB Bank and 3Trees Ghana Painting Limited for further discussions on expanding collaboration between the Ministry and the private sector.
During the meeting, Hon. Opoku emphasised that agriculture requires substantial and patient capital, making partnerships with financial institutions indispensable to the country’s agricultural transformation agenda.
“We can formulate all the policies, but without the private sector bringing in the required capital, we cannot achieve the impact we envision. That is why we cherish this cooperation,” he said.
The Minister appealed to UMB Bank and other financial institutions to support both the Farmers’ Day celebrations and broader agricultural development initiatives.
He disclosed that some banks had previously declined requests to support the Ministry on the grounds that they were only engaged in banking and not food production.
Responding to that position, Hon. Opoku argued that every sector depends on agriculture for survival.
“Whether you are in banking or security, one thing is required—energy. And that energy is provided by the farmer. Farmers must first produce food before all of us can perform our respective duties,” he stressed.
He encouraged banks to view investments in agriculture as strategic business opportunities rather than charitable contributions.
“When financial institutions support farmers, farmers will recognise them as their bank, save with them and expand their customer base. It becomes a mutually beneficial relationship,” he explained.
Brighten Ghana Project Receives Praise
The Minister described the rehabilitation project by 3Trees Ghana as a significant investment worth millions of cedis when fully monetised, noting that it goes beyond beautification to restoring an important national institution.
According to him, the project includes both the exterior and interior repainting of the Ministry’s headquarters, creating a more conducive working environment for staff and visitors.
He observed that many government structures inherited from previous generations have deteriorated over time and require collective efforts to restore them.
“We cannot allow these structures to waste away. The Brighten Ghana initiative is about rehabilitating and preserving our national assets for future generations,” he said.
Hon. Opoku expressed confidence that the project would be completed in the coming months, providing a fitting environment as the country prepares to celebrate Ghana’s farmers during the 42nd National Farmers’ Day.
He concluded by reiterating the Ministry’s commitment to sustaining partnerships with both 3Trees Ghana Painting Limited and UMB Bank in support of agricultural development and national progress.
