Ghana Water Assures Accountability for GoldBod’s GH¢8.4 Million Water Rehabilitation Support

The Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Hon. Adam Mutawakilu, has pledged prudent and transparent use of the GH¢8.4 million provided by the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) for the rehabilitation of three major water supply systems affected by illegal mining.
Speaking after signing the Water Infrastructure Rehabilitation Funding and Implementation Agreement with GoldBod in Accra, Hon. Mutawakilu described the financial support as timely and critical to restoring reliable potable water supply to affected communities.
He disclosed that Ghana Water Limited has been battling severe water turbidity since 2017, following the extensive degradation of river bodies caused by illegal mining and other destructive activities.
“The issue of high turbidity has been with us for about nine years. We realised that Ghana Water alone could not address the challenge, which is why we sought support from other institutions,” he stated.
Hon. Mutawakilu praised GoldBod for responding positively to the request and for working closely with Ghana Water Limited throughout the planning process.
According to him, the intervention was preceded by comprehensive technical assessments carried out jointly by experts from both institutions to determine the extent of damage and identify the most urgent rehabilitation needs.
He assured GoldBod that every cedi allocated to the project would be used responsibly and in accordance with the terms of the agreement.
“We will ensure accountability, transparency and professionalism in the execution of this project. We are determined to deliver successful results that will justify support for the second phase,” he said.
The Managing Director revealed that Ghana Water officials would soon begin engagements with communities and operational staff in the affected areas to prepare for the commencement of the rehabilitation works.
He expressed confidence that the intervention would significantly improve water treatment operations and restore the efficiency of the affected facilities.
Hon. Mutawakilu also conveyed the appreciation of the Board Chairman and the Board of Directors of Ghana Water Limited to GoldBod for what he described as a remarkable demonstration of inter-agency collaboration in addressing one of Ghana’s pressing environmental and public health challenges.
He said the partnership reflects the importance of collective national action in protecting water resources and ensuring sustainable access to safe drinking water for all Ghanaians.
