MOMAG Calls for Professionalism, Compliance Among Mobile Money Agents

The President of the Mobile Money Advocacy Group Ghana (MOMAG), Mr Edward Ofori Agyemang, has called for greater professionalism, compliance and continuous training among mobile money agents to help curb fraud and improve customer service.
He said the association’s collaboration with Telecel Ghana was aimed at equipping agents with the knowledge and skills needed to operate professionally and in accordance with regulatory requirements.
Mr Agyemang made the call in a media interview on the sidelines of the Telecel-MOMAG Agent Conference 2026, held at the Assemblies of God Church, Shiashie branch, in Accra, under the theme: “Amplifying the Impact, Building a Safe, Trusted and Profitable Agent Network.”

He said the increasing incidence of fraud and attacks on mobile money agents made it necessary for stakeholders in the electronic money ecosystem to intensify efforts to protect agents and their customers.
“Some of the agents don’t know how to talk to customers or how to relate to customers, and customers are the people who give us the money,” he said.
According to him, some agents also failed to comply with established regulations and operated without regard for the rules governing mobile money transactions.
Mr Agyemang said the conference was therefore intended to strengthen the capacity of agents and ensure that they understood their responsibilities and conducted their businesses in compliance with the law.

He disclosed that MOMAG organised periodic capacity-building programmes for its members, both physically and online.
He said the association organised physical capacity-building sessions three times every year in collaboration with electronic money issuers and the Bank of Ghana.
Mr Agyemang added that MOMAG also used its WhatsApp platforms to organise online training sessions for agents who were unable to attend physical programmes.
He said the association had also created a “Diaspora” chapter for members scattered across different locations, enabling them to participate in capacity-building programmes virtually.
“We do periodic engagement with them and capacity building because they need to always remember what they are being taught,” he said.
Measures against fraud
Mr Agyemang said MOMAG had introduced measures to prevent fraudulent individuals from joining the association and to help identify agents engaged in fraudulent activities.

He explained that prospective members were required to provide their Ghana Card, business details and relevant registration documents for verification before they could join the association.
He said the verification process was designed to ensure that the identity of an applicant matched the information contained in the applicant’s business registration documents.
“Somebody can pick someone’s document and come and join the association, but when you pick someone’s document and join the association and we check the name and the name doesn’t match with the document on the Registrar-General’s document, you can’t join the association,” he said.

Mr Agyemang said MOMAG also supported measures by electronic money issuers to remove agents found to have engaged in fraudulent activities.
He noted that one electronic money issuer had sanctioned about 9,000 agents for alleged fraudulent activities, resulting in their being blocked from the system.
He said MOMAG was committed to supporting efforts to ensure that agents who engaged in fraudulent transactions were removed from the system while credible operators were retained.
Agent commission
Commenting on the new agent commission announced at the conference, Mr Agyemang said it was too early to assess its impact.

He explained that the commission structure had only been announced that day and that agents needed some time to operate under the new arrangement before the association could make a meaningful assessment.
“The agent commission that was announced today, it is today that they just announced it, and you will give me some time or give us some time to do business and see how things will go, so I can’t say much on that,” he said.
