Police Foil Planned Highway Robbery in Bono; Five High-Powered Weapons Retrieved, One Suspect Dead

The Ghana Police Service has recovered five assorted firearms following an intelligence-led operation by the Bono Regional Police Command targeting suspected robbery gangs operating within the Bono Region.
According to a press release signed by Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, Public Relations Officer of the Command, police intelligence on February 11, 2026, indicated that a gang had planned to attack traders travelling along the Dormaa–Gonokrom highway. Surveillance teams were immediately deployed to the area to foil the intended robbery.
In the early hours of February 12, 2026, officers advancing towards a parked motorbike in the area came under gunfire from nearby bushes. The police returned fire. A search conducted at daybreak led to the discovery of one male suspect dead, with an AK-47 rifle beside him.
Further search of the scene resulted in the recovery of a sack containing additional weapons and ammunition. The items retrieved included two Baikal single-barrel guns, a pump-action gun, one Beretta pistol loaded with three rounds of 9mm ammunition and 34 additional rounds of 9mm ammunition, one AK-47 rifle loaded with 11 rounds of ammunition and 10 extra rounds, 39 rounds of BB cartridges, a dagger, a mobile phone, a Honda motorbike, a black mask and a set of talisman.
The body of the deceased suspect has been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.
The Bono Regional Police Command assured the public that efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the gang. The Command also appealed to the public to volunteer credible information that could lead to the arrest of individuals involved in criminal activities, reaffirming its commitment to enhancing safety and security across the Region.
