6,500 Laptops for Nationwide Rollout of One Million Coders Programme- Communication Minister

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has announced that about 6,500 laptops will be distributed across the country as part of the national rollout of the One Million Coders Programme.
Speaking at a laptop presentation ceremony in Accra on Friday, April 10, 2026, the Minister disclosed that each of the 130 learning centres to be established nationwide will be equipped with 50 customised laptops. The devices will be drawn from a government stock of 20,000 laptops.
Mr. George explained that the programme, launched by President John Dramani Mahama, began as a pilot initiative to test its effectiveness. According to him, although the pilot initially targeted 500 beneficiaries, it attracted nearly 94,000 applications, forcing an early closure of the application portal.
He said about 1,000 participants were eventually selected and trained, with their performance carefully assessed to inform improvements ahead of the full-scale rollout.
The Minister noted that the nationwide phase will span all 16 regions, with the 130 learning centres aimed at equipping young people with relevant digital skills. He emphasised that the programme is not only focused on training but also on preparing participants for employment opportunities within the digital economy.
Mr. George further revealed that the initiative will be extended to about 12 universities, including Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and University of Ghana, among others.
He added that the application portal will soon be reopened, allowing previous applicants to continue their registration process, while new applicants will undergo a verified registration system designed to minimise fraudulent entries.
The Minister also highlighted partnerships with private sector players such as MTN Ghana, which has provided funding support for additional laptops.
He assured that the government remains committed to the successful implementation of the programme, with the aim of building a strong pool of skilled ICT professionals to drive Ghana’s digital transformation agenda.
