The Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has reaffirmed government’s strong commitment to environmental protection, land administration reforms and institutional accountability, assuring the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources of the full backing of the Presidency.
Delivering a keynote address during a working visit to the Ministry, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said the visit was intended to ensure alignment between the Presidency and the Ministry, as well as to put “faces to names” behind official reports, noting that the real work of governance is done by dedicated public servants on the ground.
She commended the Minister and his team for their achievements so far, describing the Ministry’s portfolio as extensive and critical to national life, given its direct impact on land, natural resources and the environment. According to her, the Ministry’s work affects the survival and well-being of all Ghanaians, whether on land, air or water.
The Vice President praised ongoing interventions, including a five-point strategy to address environmental degradation and efforts to retrieve lands equivalent to several football fields, describing these as significant success stories. She stressed that environmental reclamation is not only a moral duty but a matter of national survival.
“Protecting the environment is protecting ourselves,” she noted, adding that no amount of financial gain can justify the long-term damage caused by environmental destruction.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also highlighted the importance of digitizing land records and decentralizing services, stating that decentralisation is key to solving problems at the grassroots where most citizens live.
She further made a strong appeal for gender inclusion in land administration, urging that land banks should deliberately make room for women, particularly those interested in farming but who often lack access to land.
Commending the Ministry’s leadership and its affiliated agencies, the Vice President assured staff of continuous government support, encouraging them to intensify their efforts. She congratulated the Ministry on its one-year milestone under the current administration and expressed confidence in its ability to deliver even greater results.
The Vice President concluded by wishing the Ministry and its agencies a successful year ahead and thanking them for their service to the nation.
