NIA Refutes Claims of Reduced Ghana Card Validity Period

Accra, September 23, 2025 — The National Identification Authority (NIA) has dismissed claims circulating on social media suggesting that the validity period of the Ghana Card has been reduced from ten years.
In a press release signed by the Head of Corporate Affairs, Williams Ampomah E. Darlas, the Authority emphasized that no amendment has been made or proposed to change the validity period. The Ghana Card, it clarified, remains valid for ten (10) years from the date of issuance, after which holders are required by law to renew.
The clarification follows media reports that attributed comments by the NIA’s Executive Secretary, Mr. Wisdom Kwaku Deku, to an alleged policy change. The Authority explained that Mr. Deku’s remarks were misrepresented. According to the statement, his comments were only suggestions that future reviews could explore shorter update intervals, given the fast pace of technological advancement and the card’s evolving uses.
The NIA stressed that the current ten-year renewal requirement is crucial because the physical card has a lifespan of about ten years, while cardholders’ personal features—such as facial appearance—are likely to change during that period, making updated photographs and record verification necessary.
“The public is urged to disregard the false information in circulation. The Ghana Card remains valid for ten years, and no amendment has been made to alter this,” the statement read.
The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a secure, reliable, and future-ready national identity system for all Ghanaians.
For further enquiries, the NIA advised the public to contact its Corporate Affairs Directorate via 0549889525 or 0302999306.
