The Ghana Police Service has arrested 12 suspects in two separate robbery cases, including a high-profile highway robbery involving a Member of the Council of State and a coordinated armed attack at Nkaseim in the Ahafo Region.

Addressing the media at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters in Accra on Thursday, the Director-General of the CID, Commissioner of Police (COP) Ms. Lydia Yaako Donkor, said the arrests were the result of sustained intelligence-led and forensic-driven operations aimed at combating robbery and other violent crimes nationwide.

She noted that the operations form part of a broader national strategy to protect lives, secure property and maintain public safety.

Council of State Robbery Case

COP Donkor disclosed that seven suspects have been arrested in connection with a highway robbery attack on a Member of the Council of State on July 21, 2025, along the Tamale–Buipe Highway.

The suspects are Rashida Yusif, Aaron Abana Baswiefanga, Wilson Avasong, Muntaru Iddrisu, also known as “Virgin,” Aminu Zebrilla, alias “Birdman,” Inusah Sumaila, alias “Agenda,” and Haruna Safiano.

According to police, the victim was attacked by six armed men and robbed of mobile phones, cash, wristwatches, a laptop, reading glasses and other personal items.

Following intelligence gathered by the CID, officers from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit arrested Rashida Yusif on January 11, 2026, in Salaga in the Savannah Region, after she was found in possession of an iPhone 7 Plus belonging to the victim.

Further investigations led to the arrest of a mobile phone shop attendant, Aaron Abana Baswiefanga, at Dagomba Line in Salaga. He revealed that the phone had been brought to the shop by his uncle, Wilson Avasong, an environmental officer and the shop’s owner, who was later arrested in Tamale.

Police said Wilson Avasong admitted purchasing the phone from a phone repairer, Muntaru Iddrisu, for GH¢1,000. Muntaru Iddrisu was subsequently arrested at the Tamale Aboabo Market and led police to Aminu Zebrilla, a 35-year-old okada rider, who admitted selling the phone for GH¢650.

A search of Aminu Zebrilla’s room yielded weapons and several stolen items, including locally manufactured firearms, live ammunition, a sword, face masks, assorted mobile phones, wristwatches, pen drives, SIM cards, a motorbike and dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

Police further revealed that Aminu Zebrilla is an ex-convict who was previously jailed for robbery in 2012. Two other accomplices, Inusah Sumaila and Haruna Safiano, were later arrested behind the Tamale China Mall.

Investigations are ongoing to arrest other suspects believed to be on the run and to retrieve additional weapons.

Nkaseim Robbery

In a separate operation, five suspects have been arrested in connection with an armed robbery attack at Nkaseim in the Ahafo Region on December 2, 2025.

The suspects — Mutar Kofi, Mahamadu Sagio, Shaibu Issah Jallo, alias “Jibo,” Abdul Suleman and Bukari Sulley, alias “Tailor” — are accused of blocking the Goaso–Tepa road and simultaneously attacking the Nkaseim Police Station, Adwumapa Cocoa Buying Company, Kobby Gold Buying Company and the Asutifi Rural Bank area.

During the attack, the assailants allegedly made away with two AK47 service rifles and cash amounts, including GH¢14,000 from the cocoa buying company and GH¢12,000 from the gold buying company. An employee of the cocoa buying company was also shot and injured.

Police said Mutar Kofi, a 35-year-old commercial tricycle rider, was arrested on January 16, 2026, near Nkaseim and admitted his involvement. Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of Mahamadu Sagio, an illegal miner, Shaibu Issah Jallo, a trader from Chereponi, Abdul Suleman, a herdsman from Tanga near Karaga, and Bukari Sulley, a trader based in Kumasi.

Efforts are ongoing to arrest the alleged gang leader, identified as Hoyeefi, who is believed to be in possession of the stolen rifles, as well as two other suspects, Dauda and Mohammed Ali, who remain at large.

Public Advisory

COP Donkor urged the public to remain vigilant and take personal security seriously, especially against cyber and online crimes. She cautioned against sharing personal or financial information with unknown individuals and advised motorists to exercise caution when travelling at night or in isolated areas.

She encouraged the public to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station and commended police officers for their dedication and professionalism.

On behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, she also expressed appreciation to members of the public and the media for their continued support and cooperation in the fight against crime.
