Nanton MP Backs Preventive Healthcare, Highlights Role of Ghana Medical Trust Fund

The Member of Parliament for Nanton and a member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health, Hon. Dr. Mohammed Sherif Abdul-Khaliq, has expressed concerns over the operations of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, while urging greater focus on preventive healthcare delivery.
Speaking to the media, Dr. Abdul-Khaliq explained that the uncapping of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has created fiscal space for government to channel additional resources into the Ghana Medical Trust Fund. According to him, this intervention has enabled government to support health facilities nationwide to better respond to the medical needs of citizens — a critical step in strengthening the healthcare system.
He further disclosed that government is set to introduce a new Primary Health Policy, which seeks to decentralize healthcare delivery by extending services to the grassroots level.
Highlighting the importance of early detection and prevention, Dr. Abdul-Khaliq underscored regular health screening as a cost-effective approach compared to curative treatment. “Preventive medicine remains the best tool for protecting lives and reducing long-term healthcare costs,” he stressed.
The Nanton MP noted that ongoing initiatives — including the capping of the NHIS, the launch of the Mahama Cares programme, the forthcoming Free Primary Health Care Policy, and sustained investments in health infrastructure — are part of a broader government strategy aimed at enhancing the health and well-being of Ghanaians.
