Story by Eugene Nyarko Jnr. | Asylum Down, Accra | February 18, 2026

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formally adopted detailed rules and regulations to govern its 2026 internal elections, outlining a structured roadmap for the election of party executives from the polling station level to the national level.

The guidelines were approved at meetings of the Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Council held on February 17, 2026. The reforms, according to the Party, are aimed at strengthening internal democratic processes, entrenching transparency and discipline, and repositioning the NPP for victory in the 2028 general elections

Membership Registration Mandatory

Central to the new framework is a comprehensive registration of party members scheduled from March 1 to March 31, 2026. The exercise, to be conducted at respective polling stations, has been declared mandatory for all members who wish to vote or contest in the upcoming internal elections.

Only members whose names are captured in the official polling station register and who have paid their dues will be eligible to participate. The Party emphasised that failure to register within the stipulated period will automatically disqualify a member from voting or contesting.

Constituency Secretariats will be responsible for entering members’ details into the Party’s electronic membership management system, under the supervision of Constituency Executive Committees and Regional Steering Committees.

Structured Election Process

The internal elections will proceed in phases, beginning with polling station executive elections in May 2026, followed by Electoral Area, Constituency, Chapter, Branch, Regional and finally National Officers elections.

Polling station elections are slated for May 10 to May 16, 2026, with nomination forms priced at GH¢10. Electoral Area elections will follow in June, with nomination forms costing GH¢50.

For Constituency Executive positions, nomination fees range from GH¢500 for most positions to GH¢1,500 for the Constituency Chairman slot. Regional Chairman aspirants will pay GH¢10,000, while National Chairman hopefuls will be required to pay GH¢50,000.

The Party stated that elections at the Constituency and Regional levels will be conducted by the Electoral Commission of Ghana in line with the Political Parties Act, 2000 (Act 574).

Clear Eligibility Criteria

The new regulations set out detailed qualification and eligibility requirements for aspirants at all levels. Among the key conditions are:

  • Registered party membership in the relevant area.
  • Payment of membership dues.
  • Demonstrated active party membership for a specified period.
  • Educational qualifications for certain positions, including at least a Diploma for some Constituency roles and a Degree for Regional Secretary aspirants.
  • Age cap of 40 years for Polling Station Youth Organiser candidates.

The Party also emphasised residency and voter registration requirements with the Electoral Commission of Ghana.

Appeals and Oversight Mechanisms

A multi-tier appeals system has been established to address grievances. Aggrieved aspirants may petition Constituency, Regional or National bodies depending on the level of election, with strict 48-hour timelines set for determinations at various stages.

Dedicated Elections Committees will supervise each level of the process, while oversight responsibilities will rest with the National Secretariat and relevant Steering Committees.

Code of Conduct for Aspirants

All aspirants are required to adhere strictly to a Code of Conduct that prohibits personal attacks, unsubstantiated allegations, and campaigns that promote tribal, religious or factional divisions. Aspirants are also mandated to ensure that their supporters comply with these guidelines.

Timelines Through September 2026

The process will culminate in the National Officers elections scheduled for September 18 to September 20, 2026, following nominations and vetting in August.

Party officials describe the comprehensive reforms as a decisive step in the NPP’s rebuilding agenda, following recommendations from the Oquaye Election Review Committee on the Party’s 2024 electoral performance.

With clear timelines, structured oversight, and stricter eligibility standards, the NPP says the 2026 internal elections are designed to produce competent and principled leadership capable of steering the Party toward electoral success in 2028.
