The Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding access to quality and specialized healthcare with the launch of a dialysis service and an Eye Unit at St. Michael’s Specialist Hospital in Lapaz, Accra.

Speaking at the launch on Thursday, February 5, 2026, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Okaikwei North, Hon. Christian Tetteh Badger, described the initiative as a major milestone in strengthening healthcare delivery within the municipality.

According to him, the establishment of the dialysis and eye care units will significantly enhance the local health system and improve access to critical medical services for residents, particularly those requiring long-term and specialized care. He noted that the development reflects the Assembly’s broader commitment to ensuring healthcare that is accessible, affordable, and equitable.

Hon. Badger emphasized the strategic role of the Municipal Health Directorate, stating that beyond administrative functions, the directorate is responsible for policy direction, resource mobilization, community engagement, and coordination of health services. He assured stakeholders that the Assembly would continue to align municipal health initiatives with national health policies while advocating inclusive healthcare reforms, especially for vulnerable and marginalized groups.

The MCE also referenced the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Cares, launched by the government of President John Dramani Mahama. He explained that the initiative, which supports the management of chronic non-communicable diseases such as kidney and liver conditions, demonstrates government’s commitment to reducing the financial burden of long-term treatment for Ghanaians.

Hon. Badger stressed that the Assembly would facilitate adequate resourcing for health infrastructure, human resources, and essential medical supplies, while ensuring equitable distribution of healthcare resources across communities in the municipality. He added that preventive healthcare would remain a priority as a sustainable way to improve overall health outcomes.

Describing the launch as the beginning of a new era in municipal healthcare delivery, the MCE called for collective commitment to building a resilient, responsive, and people-centered health system. He noted that effective healthcare extends beyond hospital settings and announced plans to intensify health education programmes to promote preventive care, healthy lifestyles, and public participation in environmental cleanliness and healthcare decision-making.

He further highlighted the importance of partnerships, pledging continued collaboration with non-governmental organizations, the private sector, and international partners. He also underscored the need for intersectoral cooperation with education, water, and sanitation departments, as well as stronger coordination between municipal and national health authorities.

Hon. Badger expressed confidence that these efforts would strengthen primary healthcare systems, reduce health inequities, and improve public trust in healthcare services, ultimately leading to better health outcomes for residents.

He concluded by urging St. Michael’s Specialist Hospital to maintain high standards in service delivery, noting that municipal assemblies play a crucial role in achieving universal health coverage through localized, inclusive, and accountable healthcare reforms.
