High Stakes as Thousands Vie for Limited Police Academy Places

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has assured candidates sitting for this year’s Police Competitive Promotional Examinations (PCPE) that the process will be strictly merit-based.
Addressing concerns over alleged favouritism, the IGP dismissed such claims and urged all Chief Inspectors participating in the examination to focus on their studies and adhere to the laid-down rules.
Speaking in an interview with the Daily Graphic, Mr Yohuno emphasised that only candidates who meet the required pass mark would be selected for admission into the Police Academy.
“On behalf of the Police Management Board (POMAB) and the Police Council, I wish all candidates well. The administration does not have any hand in the selection process. It is only your performance that will speak for you,” he stated.
He further cautioned candidates against paying attention to rumours, stressing that no individual would receive preferential treatment.
“Nobody from anywhere is going to favour anybody ahead of anyone. Just concentrate on your studies and if you meet the pass mark, you will be given the opportunity,” he added.
Mr Yohuno acknowledged the competitive nature of the examination, given the large number of candidates involved, noting that although all applicants are qualified, only a limited number can be admitted.
A total of 7,133 Chief Inspectors across the country have been cleared by the Police Administration to participate in this year’s examination, which is aimed at grooming a new crop of senior police officers.
The examination is scheduled to take place on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at three designated centres in Accra.
Prior to the exams, candidates will undergo briefing and orientation by the University of Cape Coast on Friday, April 10, 2026, at the National Police Training School grounds. Orientation guides have also been distributed to candidates to familiarise them with the rules and regulations.
According to an earlier circular issued by the Police Administration, only the top 700 candidates, based on merit, will be selected to form Cadet Course 54 and Cadet Course 55 at the Police Academy.
