GNPC CEO elected chairman of African Petroleum Producers’ Organisation

Ghana has successfully hosted the 7th African Petroleum Producers’ Organisation (APPO) National Oil Companies CEOs Meeting, drawing chief executives and senior officials from nineteen African oil-producing nations for two days of high-level strategy sessions in Accra from 14 to 15 September.

The gathering underscored Ghana’s growing stature as a hub for continental energy dialogue and investment.

The prestigious summit, organised by the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) alongside Africa Oil Week 2025, focused on the pressing challenges and opportunities facing Africa’s petroleum sector.

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, opened the conference, reaffirming the country’s commitment to regional cooperation and a balanced energy transition.

A key highlight was the election of GNPC Chief Executive, Kwame Ntow Amoah, as the new Chairman of APPO, succeeding Bienvenido Nguema Envo of Equatorial Guinea’s GEPetrol.

“The fact that Ghana has been chosen to host this flagship gathering demonstrates our country’s growing importance in Africa’s energy landscape,” Mr Amoah said at the handover ceremony. “This forum enables us to respond not individually but collectively to the challenges facing our industry.”

Representatives from APPO’s 18 other member states, including Algeria, Angola, Benin, Cameroon, Chad, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Libya, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal and South Africa, engaged in comprehensive discussions on innovation, infrastructure development and local content strategies.

Delegates examined ways to expand regional petroleum infrastructure, strengthen the Africa Energy Bank initiative, improve financing for exploration and production, and foster technology transfer to meet both growing energy demand and climate transition goals.

Industry analysts noted that hosting the event alongside Africa Oil Week maximised networking opportunities and highlighted Ghana’s stable political environment, improving infrastructure and strategic West African location, all factors that reinforce its appeal as a destination for large-scale energy investment and conferences.

The meeting also addressed workforce development, climate considerations and intra-African trading relationships, identifying practical mechanisms to deepen cooperation among national oil companies. Outgoing APPO Chairman Nguema Envo praised Ghana’s hospitality and the seamless organisation, describing APPO as “a prime platform to share experiences and ideas for managing the ever-dynamic oil and gas industry.”
